Today’s Christmas Carol: Joy to the World

Joy to the World

The words to Joy to the World were written by Isaac Watts in 1719, based on the last half of Psalm 98 in the Bible. The music was adapted from Handel’s Messiah to the carol by Lowell Mason.

This is a very happy song about Jesus coming to earth. It doesn’t have to be a Christmas carol (it could be a hymn for any time of the year), but when most people think of it, they think of Christmas. Or at least I think of Christmas when I hear it! 🙂

Lyrics:

Joy to the world! The Lord has come
Let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare Him room

And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven, and heaven and nature sing

Joy to the world! the Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods
Rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy

No more let sins and sorrows grow
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found.
As the curse is found.
