Today’s Christmas Carol: O Holy Night

O Holy Night

The music to O Holy Night was originally written by Adolphe Adam in 1847 for a French poem, “Midnight, Christians.” Later, an English version was written; today’s O Holy Night.

This is a very beautiful, very holy-sounding carol. Whenever someone sings it (or plays it, as I did in a concert this year), you get the feeling that you need to be quiet and listen.

This isn’t a song I usually sing, mostly because it’s a song that really requires a choir to give it justice. I like it, though, and it’s definitely worth listening to. 🙂

Lyrics:

O Holy Night
The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth
Long lay the world in sin and e’er pining
‘Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

Fall on your knees O hear the angels voices.
O night divine O night when Christ was born
O night divine, O night, O night divine.

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here came the wise men from Orient land.
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friend.

He knows our need, to our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother;
And in His name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name.

Christ is the Lord! O praise His Name forever,
His power and glory evermore proclaim.
O night divine, O night, O night divine.

    1. I sure do hope its not just us! 😉
      But you’re right, we’re probably NOT the only two.

      It kinda boggles my mind that we’re on the same planet and yet different days! Anyhoo, that’s awesome for you!

  2. Ouch. That hurt. 😉

    But seriously, isn’t it even a little bit hard to wrap your brain around such a crazy cool fact?!
    Maybe it’s just me…
    Maybe … *gulp* … maybe my brain is dwarfed ….
