Today’s Christmas Carol: Still, Still, Still

Still, Still, Still:

Still, Still, Still is an Austrian Christmas carol and lullaby. The melody is an old folk tune from the State of Salzburg.

I just learned Still, Still, Still this last autumn. It’s a very soft, very loving song. It’s a lot like Away in the Manger, only lighter and more … snowy, if that makes any sense. I haven’t heard it through my childhood, it doesn’t give me a pleasant feelings of nostalgia, but the music and lyrics are incredibly beautiful. 🙂

Lyrics:

Still, still, still,
One can hear the falling snow.
For all is hushed,
The world is sleeping,
Holy Star it’s vigil keeping.
Still, still, still,
One can hear the falling snow.

Sleep, sleep, sleep,
‘Tis the eve of our Saviour’s birth.
The night is peaceful all around you,
Close your eyes,
Let sleep surround you.
Sleep, sleep, sleep,
‘Tis the eve of our Saviour’s birth.

Dream, dream, dream,
Of the joyous day to come.
While guardian angels without number,
Watch you as you sweetly slumber.
Dream, dream, dream,
Of the joyous day to come.

A few versions:

What are your thoughts on Still, Still, Still? Have you heard it before?
