NaNoWriMo: Day 3

Yesterday I got my word count up to 3,710. So far today I’ve gotten it up to 4049 and I’m now taking a short break before I start chapter two.

Yes, I know I made the prologue and first chapter really long. Probably I’ll divide the first chapter in half and get rid of a bit of the prologue when I edit.

Anyway, I’m glad to be done with the troublesome first chapter. I wrote a lot of stuff rather quick in it and when I edit it the first word that will come to my mind will be ‘train wreck’ (that’s two words ….) and I’ll begin banging my head against the desk screaming, “WHY DID I DO THIS!!!!????” but right now it looks great.

Want to see a bit of what looks “great” right now? I read over it once, so it might lean towards mediocre! 😉

Ivy Inquisitive: End of Chapter One

Ivy, who was, as you remember, sitting on the floor playing with her dolls, had been listening to this conversation. Perhaps you do not find this marvelous, but you do not know Ivy as well as I do. When Alice was in the room, every knew to guard their tongues, but when it was just Ivy, no one ever thought a thing about talking about whatever they wished in her presence. Because she didn’t listen. Because most though she couldn’t.

The truth was that for the first eleven years of her life, Ivy had been unable to understand a word adults said to each other and very little of what they said to her. She was barely aware of the existence of people on this earth other than her mother, Nettie, and Alice. But everything had been different that evening. Everything had been brighter.

As if her world had been suddenly colorized, the monotony ceased and something woke up in Ivy. And she listened to her mother’s conversation. And she understood parts of what was said. And she was curious to learn more about this wonderful colorful world about her.

Ivy became inquisitive.

Please ignore the terrible grammar/spelling/punctuation/wording/etc.

Well, I’m off to start chapter two (in which I introduce a bunch more characters that will add to the general confusion).

  1. It’s ABSOLUTELY AWESOME,Kellbie!!!

I love, love, LOVE(!!!) that paragragh right before the sentence “ivy became inquisitive!”
I read it twice. Then out loud. Then out loud again.
    It’s perfect.

p.s. I forgive you for all the terrible grammar mistakes you made that REALLY ruined my day.

    p.p.s. just kidding!

    1. I’m not really sure. I think I might want to focus on Ivy’s perspective a little for a while. A friend of mine suggested I write a couple chapters in 1st person from Ivy’s POV … I might just do 3rd, her POV, though.
